AlexÕs Fat Ass 50
January 3, 2004
by
Alex Morton, Run Director
The FA run moved to the tropical,
nature-oriented setting of Palmetto Islands County Park in Mt. Pleasant for the
7th year of this run. This move was
necessary due to the building of the new Cooper River Bridge, as getting
runners through the new construction area was considered too dangerous. The course consists of one
initial short out-and-back spur (0.92 miles) and nine multiple loops (3.35
miles) to make 50 K. There was not a 50 Mile option this year. The course was
flat and was run on a combination of trails consisting of primitive dirt,
upgraded limestone, modern asphalt, and 12 wooded boardwalks over marsh and
water to make for an interesting course.
The first
finisher in the 50 K event was Brad Smythe, of Raleigh, NC in 4:02. Andrea
Steward of Columbia SC was the first female finisher in 4:53.
The weather was
excellent, starting off in the high 50Õs and warming to the mid 70Õs with
mostly clear and sunny conditions all day.
